I’ve been asked quite a few times what my favorite lens is (or focal length) for wedding photography. When I was shooting with Canon it was a Sigma 35mm f/1.4. Now that I’m with Sony, it’s the Sony Distagon T FE 35mm f/1.4 which is by far, the best 35mm lens I’ve ever used.
The reason I love this focal length so much is because for my style of shooting, I find it to be the most versatile prime lens in my bag. For weddings, I can shoot portraits with shallow dof, environmental portraits, couple shots, family portraits, group shots and even detail shots all with a single prime.
While I do have an 85mm prime in my bag for those super creamy out of focus background portraits, I tend to use the 35mm much more because I love environmental portraits for weddings. I love being able to provide a glimpse of the space because I think it sets the mood and vibe of the wedding. For me, when I look back at a portrait, I want the memories of the place I’m in, how I felt there in that moment.
Add to the fact that it is also great for landscapes, street photography and travel documentary, it’s a lens that I’ll always have with me.
Anyway… all of the images in this post (with the exception of one) are shot using the Sony Distagon T FE 35mm f/1.4 at f/1.4.
